Gym and Fitness Center
The YMCA of Austin is not just a regular health club or a gym, it is truly a community. Founded in 1953, the YMCA of Austin is a cause-driven organization that is for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. As a non-profit organization, the Austin Y is a community center; responding to the community, bringing people together for a positive cause, connecting people of all ages and backgrounds to bridge the gaps of the community, nurturing potential, and having a local presence. Moreover, the YMCA has served globally. In 1901, Henry Dunant, co-founder of the Geneva YMCA in 1852, won the first Nobel Peace Prize for founding the International Committee of the Red Cross. In 1946, John R. Mott, long-serving leader of the YMCA, also won the Nobel Peace Prize for establishing Protestant Christian student organizations that promoted peace. Originally founded as an association for young, Christian, men, the YMCA now provides opportunities for all; no matter race, religious affiliation, or income. The Membership for All program, is a plan offered for those who need financial assistance; rates are based on the household income of each family or individual that joins the YMCA.
