Water safety is a top priority for Greater Austin YMCA. In 2023 with guidance from YMCA of the USA, we strengthened our swim policies to support updates made to Texas pool codes.
Those updates included a new swim test and color band system which will remain in place at all Greater Austin YMCA locations.
- All swimmers aged 13 and younger must have a parent/guardian (ages 18+) in the pool area actively supervising all activities.
- Swimmers aged 13 and younger will need to pass a swim test in order to be in the water without a parent/guardian at arm’s reach.
- Our swim test consists of:
- Underwater submersion
- 25-yard freestyle swim
- 30-second water tread
Slide Safety Protocol (East Communities, Northwest Family and Hays Communities Y):
In adherence to safety standards, individuals must meet a minimum height requirement of 48 inches to access and utilize any pool slide. This measure is implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of all patrons. Anyone who meets the height requirements and intends to use the slide will receive a pink wristband in addition to any swim test band that corresponds to that facility’s water depth.
What are the color levels and what do they mean?
There are three color levels – Green, Yellow, and Red.
Green: Can swim anywhere in the pool.
Yellow: Only shallow water swimming permitted up to 5ft.
Red: Swimmer can be in water up to their armpits with a personal flotation device and supervised.
What if my child is already swim tested?
All swim tests reset at the beginning of the calendar year. Please see any aquatic staff for your new 2024 swim test.
We truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns, please connect with the Aquatics department or the Welcome Desk at any of our Centers.
Pools open Saturday, May 18th at all locations.
