With summer coming to a close and school back in session, you may be looking for some new family outdoor activities in Texas to fill your weekends. While the world has been dealing with a lot this year and things look less than normal, there are still a wide variety of family-friendly  outdoor adventures in Texas that we think you and your kiddos will love. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite outdoor activities for your family to enjoy together this year.

Texas National Parks

Big Bend National Park

Big Bend is currently open for day use. Filled with scenic drives, trails, and tons of wildlife, your little ones will love exploring here. And if you happen to have a fourth grader, he or she can get your whole family into the park for free!

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is open for adventure! Known for some of the best hiking trails in Texas, it’s a perfect spot for family outdoor adventure. Take in stunning views of El Capitan’s towering limestone cliffs and hike to Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas, for an unforgettable outdoor experience.

Family Outdoor Adventures in The Woodlands

George Mitchell Nature Preserve

Spanning over 1,700 acres, this preserve is an invitation to explore the native flora and fauna of The Woodlands. The 2-3 mile hiking loops are gentle enough for little legs but adventurous enough to excite young explorers.

Lake Woodlands

Perfect for a sunny day, Lake Woodlands offers numerous kid-friendly activities. Whether you fancy a picnic by the water or a paddleboat ride, there’s something for everyone.

Tamarac Park

With playgrounds, fishing ponds, and ample green spaces, Tamarac Park is the ideal spot for kid-friendly activities.

Burroughs Park

Spanning over 320 acres, the park offers fishing, playgrounds, and numerous sports fields. But the real gem? The beautiful 7-acre lake and surrounding forested areas, perfect for hiking and nature spotting.

Wildlife & Nature Attractions

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center

Animal lovers will have the time of their lives at this wildlife center. The center emphasizes environmental education and is passionate about teaching children about animals in danger around the world.

Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge

If you’ve already been to Fossil Rim, consider visiting Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge.With over 12 miles of nature trails, families can enjoy wildlife up close and personal. You may even see an ocelot, a small cat that is only found in the southernmost tip of Texas.

National Butterfly Center

After you’ve visited the Santa Ana refuge, be sure to stop by the National Butterfly Center, which is just half an hour away.

Whatever you decide to do this weekend, don’t forget to bring your masks. Many facilities are requiring masks to keep guests safe.
