Practical Family Goals for the New Year

Published On: January 2, 2023Categories: Community & Culture

New Year’s resolutions aren’t for everyone, and that’s ok! While traditional resolutions can get a bad rap for being too extreme or unrealistic to actually maintain, there are plenty of practical goals that families can pursue as we dive into a brand new year. Family goals are a great way to get excited about something as an entire family unit, work together to accomplish said goal, and grow in various areas of life!

You might already have some ideas of family goals you’d like to work toward this year. If you don’t, we came up with a few practical goals that we think every family would benefit from. Each goal is a “more” goal. Instead of putting specific numbers on goals, a “more” goal simply encourages you to do a certain thing more. Keep reading for our ideas!

Get Outside More

There are so many reasons to spend family time outside, along with so many ways to do that! Have more summer picnics, morning walks, evening walks, playground excursions, hiking adventures, or whatever outdoor activities your family enjoys most.

Eat Together More

We can all agree that life is busy, no matter who you are! Maybe you can find time in your week to have one, un-rushed family meal together. It doesn’t have to be dinner, either—what about a weekday breakfast as a family if that works best for you? Use the time to ask each other fun questions!

Drink More Water

If you’re looking for a health-related goal, here’s a great one! Hydration is important no matter how old you are, so this family goal is helpful for the whole family! Here are some hydration tips to help.

Read Together More

Pick a few books to read out loud together as a family. You don’t need to read every day to meet this goal—maybe you’ll read one chapter a week and finish a couple of books in the year. It’s not about the quantity, it’s about spending time together as a family.

Did one or two of these family goals resonate with you? Whether you choose a goal from above or come up with your own, be sure to invite your entire family into it! Get them excited about being outside as a family, reading at bedtime, or whatever it is you’d like to do more of in 2023. You may even find that they help keep you accountable when days or weeks come that the goals slip your mind, or you just want to put them off.

Here’s to a year of more!
